We stayed with my Uncle Robert and Aunty Judy in South Dalton, near Beverly in East Yorkshire. It’s been 25 years since we last met .
They live in a house that’s in the grounds of Dalton Estate, home to the Hotham family’s grand 18th century stately home. Think private woods teeming with pheasants, gamekeepers, topiary, a coachhouse, an enormous walled kitchen garden.
A highlight for me was going though old photos and documents with Robert. Got to see lots of old pictures of my dad – who died a long time ago – growing up and in the Army in the 1950s. Robert also had postcards sent from my grandad home after the failed Dunkirk landing in 1940 and his diary from 1944 when he was stationed in Italy. As part of my ongoing family tree mission I was able to pick Robert’s brain for names, dates, details and stories of my great grandparents and their siblings.
After leaving Robert and Judy’s we found the street where Robert, my dad and family grew up in Milnsbridge, Huddersfield, and the close by the house my grandparents lived in later that I remember visiting in the 1970s.
